VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT JEFFERSON ELEMENTARY DURING SCHOOL FOOD PROJECT
Start Time: Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 11:00am
End Time: Sunday, May 9, 2010 at 6:00pm
Location: JEFFERSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL – PORT ANGELES
Greetings,
The Jefferson Lunch Project is being kicked off this week by Sodexho who is adding new, nutritious offerings on the salad bar of all five elementary schools for a trial period. YEAH!! After Spring Break, they will be trying out a menu at Jefferson for six weeks that contains healthier, and some locally grown, options.
They would like to start doing some tastings with the students at lunch time and will need groups of volunteers to hand out samples to the kids and educate them about this yummy food in their lunchroom.
This will be happening 2 times per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting March 9th. Four or five volunteers need to be available each day to hand out samples. The first week of samples will include Nash’s root vegetables on Tuesday and Vegetable Hummus and Pita chips on Thursday.
One of the requirements for volunteers to work in the schools with students is a required background check. If you would be available to help out with this fun project, please let us know. Please include in your message whether you need a background check form. Also, if you know others who would be interested in participating, please pass along the information.
Thanks so much for all your support! This is a very exciting opportunity for our community! Hope to see you in the lunchroom ;o)
PALG is Temporarily Closed
Hi Everyone,
Due to a lack of business on Port Angeles Locally Grown, I am closing PALG.
I hope this is only temporary, but it may be permanent. I will not be re-opening the ordering process at this time but listings will remain so they can be reactivated, if need be, in the near future.
Sequim Locally Grown will remain and you are welcome order from that site.
In addition to local farmers markets, another good option to buy local is Nash’s Farm Share Program of which I am the coordinator.
Thanks for your support & I hope to see you again.
Take care and stay local.

Mobile Poultry Processing Unit For Sale

Reply-To: irishdanish@gmail.com
For sale is a Mobile Poultry Processing Unit (aka The Gut-n-Go) for $8000.
It is a complete poultry processing system on a trailer. We modeled it after the processing area at Joel Salatin’s Polyface Farm where I was an intern two years ago. The only reason I am selling it is because we are moving and do not want to haul it across the country with us. If it doesn’t sell I will take it apart and bring the components with me.
Equipment Included:
- Killing Station with 6 cones for broilers or ducks and 2 cones for turkeys (the cones are traffic cones cut to size) and blood catch.
- Rotary Scalder with timer and thermostat, propane fired (This is not a shackle & dunk scalder ) , it is made for production and quality of scald. You put four or five birds in, flip a switch, and it handles the rest.
- Featherman Plucker: This handles three to four chicken at a time and plucks them in about 20-30 seconds. Turn it on, put the birds in, wait, then turn it off and pull them out.
- Two stainless steel sinks, one kitchen sized, one large restaurant size .
- Two stainless steel tables, one for eviscerating (gutting), one for quality control – these tables have been fitted with custom “gutters” which work very well to keep the water off the workers.
- Piped for fresh water to the plucker, both sinks, and work stations on the eviscerating table, and quality table.
- Drain pipe and hose that carries water away from all tables and sinks.
- All of it is on a 16’ trailer that is also included (the killing station will need to be set on the ground for processing, but fits on the trailer for storage).
The unit was designed and built for efficiency both in processing and cleanup.
We have successfully processed chickens and turkeys on this trailer. Our fastest rate so far has been 70 broilers per hour with a team of mostly inexperienced people.
It was built in 2008.
All that is needed to complete your Gut-n-Go is:
Propane tank
Knives
Buckets (for offal)
RV hose for fresh water hook-up
Chill tanks
The price is essentially what we have into it. A lot of labor and thinking went into this and by buying this complete unit you get the labor and design for free.
If you don’t need it mobile, you could remove all of the equipment, sinks and tables from the trailer, put them in a permanent processing area and you still have a good 16 foot trailer.
Please call Joe (360) 319-6840 to see it or for more information.

Cucumbers -- Who Knew?
1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.
2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.
3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.
4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.
5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!!
6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!
7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off starvation.
8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don’t have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.
9. Out of WD-40, and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone!
10. Stressed out and don’t have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber with react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown the reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.
11. Just finish a business lunch and realize you don’t have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the phytochemcials will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.
12. Looking for a ‘green’ way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but is won’t leave streaks and won’t harm you fingers or fingernails while you clean.
13. Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, and this also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!!
PALG will re-open for ordering on Friday morning 9AM. Please place your order(s) before 9PM Tuesday. Local up! Sid
